HOW to PLUCK YOUR DOG’S EAR HAIR…

DIRECTION FOR PLUCKING YOUR DOG’S EAR HAIR

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

I’m tired of paying $40.00 at the dog groomers for a ‘poodle cut’ when I want my poodle to have dreadlocks…lol… essentially I end up paying for the nail trimming, ear hair plucking,  and the expression of the anal glands…but don’t want the haircut…ALL OF WHICH would cost about the same, without the haircut… soooo … I figure… I COULD  LEARN TO DO IT ALL MYSELF… growing out the dreds and saving myself  $40.00 !!!

Sooo…………….. HOW TO PLUCK A DOG’S EAR HAIRS……………………

***NOTE***

DO NOT PLUCK  DOG’S EAR HAIRS IF THE EAR IS INFECTED Plucking the hair while the ear is infected promotes further infection by opening up hair follicles and increased trauma to the ear…

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

***NOTE***

***DO NOT USE Q-TIPS*** on a dog’s ears… THE EAR CANAL OF A DOG IS  “L”  SHAPED  and DOES NOT ALLOW DEEP PENETRATION OF FOREIGN OBJECTS… fingers, surgical clamps, or otherwise …BUT… while cleaning ears and plucking hairs …HANDLE EARS WITH CARE…

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

***NOTE***

BE SURE TO PLUCK THE HAIRS DEEP WITHIN THE EAR CANAL as stated above, a dog’s ear canal is “L” shaped and so hairs deep within the ear canal CAN and NEED to be plucked… THE ACCUMULATION OF EXCESS EAR HAIR …especially on  breeds with overlapping ear flaps… PROMOTES THE GROWTH OF BACTERIA and EAR INFECTION … from the build-up of hair, heat,  and moisture trapped under the ear flap.

***START***

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

1) BEFORE CLEANING and PLUCKINGSTART BY GETTING YOUR DOG USED HAVING HIS EARS FONDLED and HANDLED… Do this by including ‘massage’ of the head and ears in quiet moments.  Slowly get your dog used to you scratching behind the ears, massaging around the head especially around the base of the ear, stroking the ear flaps, and finally rubbing your knuckles in circles inside the ear area itself…ending with the pluck of a few ear hairs with your fingers…THEN PROCEED…

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

2)     …………………… ***DO NOT USE Q-TIPS***………………………… CLEAN THE DOG’S EARS  WITH YOUR FINGERS and COTTON BALLS SOAKED IN HYDROGEN PEROXIDE …Your fingertip should slip easily inside the ear canal without harming the ear drum… KEEP A CAREFUL GRIP on the cotton balls …DO NOT PUSH THE COTTON BALLS TOO FAR DOWN INTO THE EAR CANAL… where you may find it necessary to ‘dig out’ the cotton ball with tweezers …CLEAN OUT… all crevices, the ear canal, and around the inside of the ear flap.

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

3) Once your dog is used to having you do just about anything to its’ ears…  START BY MASSAGING THE INSIDE OF THE EARS and then QUICKLY PULLING OUT A FEW HAIRS AT A TIME WITH YOUR FINGERS… immediately follow each ‘finger pluck’  by a fast  massage rub of the outside of the ear and vocal praise …DO THIS TO BOTH EARS A FEW TIMES and THEN QUIT... before the dog becomes too uncomfortable or anxious … REPEAT OFTEN

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

4) TOOLS YOU WILL NEED…After a few episodes of friendly “finger plucking…TO CLEAN AND PLUCK EARS…you will need… a) surgical clamps  b) cornstarch or baby powder  c) cotton swabs  d) hydrogen peroxide … and MOST IMPORTANTLY… e) confidence without guilt!!!

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

5) By now your dog is comfortable and used to having its’ ears and ear hairs handled, pulled, and plucked by your fingers …NOW… comes the easy part.  LIGHTLY SPRINKLE and RUB IN CORNSTARCH or BABY POWDER INSIDE OF THE AREA OF THE EAR… This powdering helps to dry out the natural oils of the skin  (making it easier to get a grip on the hairs) and also dries up the hair follicles (which allows an easier release of  the hair roots  from the follicles when plucked)…

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

6) GRIP A FEW HAIRS at a time WITH THE SURGICAL CLAMPS and WIND UP HAIR…by rolling the clamps down to the  root base… PULL HAIRS WITH A SHORT QUICK JERK… The hairs should pluck easily with little resistance or notice by your pet…QUICKLY RUB THE EAR and GIVE PRAISE …then… REPEAT PLUCKING… Continue plucking until dog becomes anxious or until finished…

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

7) IF DOG BECOMES ANXIOUS …ALTERNATE EARS… REPEAT A FEW TIMES …THEN QUIT… giving massage and praise after each pluck.

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

8) When finished with plucking sessions CLEAN OUT EARS and remove all traces of powder with cotton soaked in hydrogen peroxide…

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

9)  FOLLOW UP THE NEXT DAY WITH MORE PLUCKING… taking  LONGER SESSIONS EACH TIME until both ears are cleanly plucked will allow your dog to become comfortable and calm with the procedure …

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

10)  CONTINUE SESSIONS …until… BOTH EARS CAN BE PLUCKED IN ONE SESSION…GIVE PRAISE… to yourself and your dog !!!
